Homework school for young girls (New Delhi, India)

A project to promote women by and for young people in India

Where: a slum near Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi, India

Project summary The Muskaan project focuses on the education of disadvantaged girls aged 5 to 15 in a slum in New Delhi. Girls are given help with homework to avoid that they drop out of school, which is still all too common. A meal is served afterwards for students who are often malnourished. Students also take courses in English, health and hygiene, etiquette and behaviour, etc. to develop their personality and prepare them for the future.

Numerous volunteers work alongside paid specialist staff. These volunteers are well-to-do students from New Delhi universities or colleges who thus have the opportunity to come into contact with residents of the poorest districts. Muskaan thus wishes to contribute to the elimination of the caste culture which is still very present in Indian culture.

Beneficiaries: 70 girls between 5 and 15 who live in poverty in one of the New Delhi slums.
